A north Canterbury famer is counting his losses after discovering 55 bull calves were stolen from his farm.
Swannanoa farm owner Chris Payne says the thieves come onto his property in the early hours of Wednesday and took the calves away in a truck.

Unoccupied houses in Canterbury subdivisions are being targeted by thieves, with whiteware and fittings the main loot items.
Five empty houses across Christchurch were burgled in one night on October 7, in Wigram Skies, Aranui, Linwood and Prebbleton.

The Ashburton farmers who had around 500 cows stolen will financially struggle to make ends meet in an unusual theft which has left farmers on edge.
However, they and Federated Farmers says farmers should keep an eye out for suspicious behaviour and take precautions to stop further thefts.
